The Hidden Health Risks of Air Fresheners

Everyone has purchased an air freshener at some point or another; be it in aerosol version or plug in.  Have you ever given thought to what ingredients you are breathing in with the use of such products?  Probably not.  You're probably only thinking of the pleasant scent they emit.

One of the primary concerns health experts have about plug-in air fresheners is their wide-spread use of phthalates.

What is a phthalate? Phthalates are a group of chemicals that make plastic soft and flexible.  It is used in hundreds of products, ranging from toys, vinyl flooring, detergents, lubricating oils, packaging, pharmaceuticals, blood bags and tubing, and personal care products, such as nail polish, hair sprays, deodorants, lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes and other fragrance products. Phthalates are famously disruptive to the body and are carcinogenic (having the potential to cause cancer).

It's best to stay away from this group of chemicals, but how?  It's probably impossible to completely remove them from our lives, as they are contained in so many everyday products.  A good start?  Ditch those air fresheners and start using pure essential oils instead.

There are many benefits from using an essential oil diffuser, aside from the obvious health benefits of stopping your usual air freshener.

Promotes Relaxation

Essential oils are calming, relaxing and help promote better sleep.  Lavender is a great essential oil that promotes relaxation and better sleep.

Boosts Immunity Against Colds and Flus

Many of the essential oils you can use are powerful anti-microbial and anti-viral, and their vapors ward off airborne pathogens before they can invade your body.  Some essential oils also can be used to boost the immune system,  Try Eucalyptus next time you're feeling a cold or flu coming on.  It also helps with respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis or allergies.

Supports Emotional Health

Some essential oils have properties that are uplifting and assist in combating depression and anxiety.  Citrus oils are great mood boosters. Try Sweet Orange or Blood Orange.

Provides Discomfort Relief

If you suffer from headaches, arthritis, muscle stiffness, essential oils can assist you.  Peppermint oil is well-known for easing the pain of headaches.  We also have our very own Head Happiness oil, which was specifically created to combat headaches of all kinds.  It contains both minty and earthy essential oils.

Makes Your Space Smell Great

As noted above, there are a myriad of chemicals and toxins that are in plug-ins, and aerosols which are harmful to our body and health. Diffusing essential oils can make your space smell great without any risk of breathing in harmful chemicals and toxins.  Pink Grapefruit or Lemon smell fresh and contain anti-bacterial properties.

The use of essential oils in place of traditional air fresheners have so many health and wellness benefits.  Diffusers come in all sizes and price ranges.  They add stylish decor to any room.  Always speak to a certified aromatherapist, as some essentail oils can be toxic to animals.  Be sure to read our blog on Which Essential Oils are Safe for Dogs.
