Best Essential Oils for Anxiety

More and more people these days are suffering from anxiety, and the go to for relief has traditionally been pharmaceuticals.

Pharmaceuticals carry a ton of side effects, can be addicting and can be extremely costly.

What if there was a more natural way of alleviating your anxiety?  There is.

Essential oils have been around for centuries, before the use of pharmaceuticals.  They have been utilized in many cultures, including Egypt, China, Southern Europe and more.

The wonder of essential oils is that they are natural, extracted from flowers, leaves, bark, seeds or roots of plants.  It is imperative, though, the essential oils you are using are pure essential oils, unadulterated and have not been diluted with chemical or additives, or they may not work as well as they are intended to.

There is no single "best" essential oils for anxiety.  Some oils work better than others for different people.  Try them all, see what works best for you.

  1. Lavender

One of the most popular essential oils to help treat anxiety is lavender.  This essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the lavender flowers.

Lavender has a calm and relaxing effect, and helps with inner peace, sleep, restlessness, irritability, panic attacks, nervous stomach and general nervous tension.

  1. Roman Chamomile

Many people have heard of chamomile.  Maybe your grandmother used to prepare a chamomile tea when you were sick with the flu.  It's known to be very soothing.  Many people don't know it's one the best essential oils and used for a variety of ailments.

The essential oil is obtained from the Chamomile flowers which can then be used in therapy.

Chamomile offers a peaceful and calming scent that offers inner harmony.  It helps to decrease irritability and overthinking.

  1. Clary Sage

Clary Sage is an essential oil that is steam distilled from flowering plants that are usually grown in Southern France.  It carries with it so many health benefits including relief from anxiety and panic attacks.

It offers peace and tranquility.  Try using it by adding a few drops to your temples or add a few drops to a hot pot of water and breathe in the euphoric botanical scent.

  1. Frankincense

Dating back to biblical times, frankincense is a great oil for treating anxiety, as well as depression.  It provides a calming and tranquil energy as well as spiritual grounding.  It helps deepen meditation and yoga practice.  It quiets the mind and settles anxiety and panic attacks.  Try blending it with Lavender.

  1. Bergamot

Bergamot helps induce sleep, relaxation and mindfulness.  It is great at reducing panic attacks and agitation.  Aside from treating anxiety, it is also beneficial for depression.

Use bergamot with caution.  It can be photosensitizing, meaning it can increase the risk of sunburn and rash. It is best to avoid use within 12 hours of sun exposure.

  1. Ylang Ylang

This popular essential oil can treat anxiety and depression due to its calming and uplifting effects. The scent helps with cheerfulness, optimism and soothes fearfulness.

It has been said to lower blood pressure and calm heart agitation.  Also works great with cases of insomnia.

Ylang ylang can cause skin irritation, so it is best to dilute with a carrier oil.  Avoid use if you have low blood pressure.

It is never safe to ingest oils or use without first diluting with a carrier oil, if you plan on using it topically.  Experimenting with oils can be fun; try blending a few essential oils or purchase a diffuser, and diffuse the oil while you sleep.
