Cold Sores .... Yuck! How Essential Oils Has Helped Me!

I hate cold sores.  I mean, who doesn't?  I have been suffering from them from a very young age.  There is nothing nice about them .... they look awful, they hurt and it feels like everyone is staring!

What is a cold sore or fever blister?  If you don't know, chances are you have never had one!  But here is a quick explanation of one.

Cold sores or Fever Blisters are painful lesions that develop on or near the lips and are known as oral herpes. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (either Type 1 or Type 2). They are often seen around the time of getting other viral infections that may have had a fever, but not always.  Sometimes stress can cause them too.

Although I am a Holistic Therapist and Aromatherapist, I always turned to the pharmacy for help.  I was always of the mentality that pharmaceuticals would help rid me of the problem faster.  That has never been the case, but I keep going back.

This morning, I got the dreaded "cold sore itch" upon waking up, and I just knew, without even looking in the mirror what was coming or already there.  I had felt feverish with the chills all week long.

I quickly went into my "essential oil lab" as I like to call it and starting making my own remedy with my essential oils.  Being a Holistic Therapist, I never thought to try essential oils for cold sores, but today was different.  What better way to rid myself of a cold sore than with pure, natural plant properties?

I quickly mixed 6 drops of tea tree oil (which is has natural properties to help with viruses and infections) and after all a cold sore is just that; a virus, with 5 oz grape seed oil (which is a carrier oil).  I applied it 4 times today with a clean cotton swab on the sore itself, and it completely shrunk down and that itching and pain is gone.  No scabbing either.

The tea tree oil working so good put me on a quest to find other essential oils that help with this horrid virus, and I wanted to share my findings with you.

Essential oils have healing properties and help your body to heal itself. Since cold sores are a type of viral infection you should try essential oils that have stronger anti viral properties.  Here is a list of essential oils known to help with cold sores:

Geranium Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Chamomile Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Lemon Essential Oil

Always remember to mix your essential oils with a carrier oil (such as grape seed oil) which will dilute the essential oil without taking away its wellness properties.  Use 1 oz of carrier oil to every 6 drops of essential oil.

Sometimes making a blend of essential oils works wonders.  Try this one:

Everyone's immune system works differently.  What essential oil might work for me, may not work for you and vice versa.  Keep trying the oils until you get the right fit for you, but when you do, it will have been worth the effort indeed.

As always, we invite you to contact us if you have any questions about holistic health and aromatherapy.  Always remember to keep away from children and not to ingest, unless directed by a doctor.

You can make a batch and put it in a dark amber bottle and use as required. I usually use 9 drops of essential oils to 15 ml of carrier oil. If you have further questions, please contact us

    Thank you.

I am just wondering about the ratios
6 drops of tea tree with 5oz (150ml) carrier oil – that seems to be a lot to make at once when only dabbing 4 times a day.
Could you confirm please. Cheers Sharon from Oz
